This piece is the happy culmination of the efforts described in a previous post, "Going deep, not wide." I can happily report that writing for small ensembles like wind quintet is incredibly challenging, and takes a lot of effort to do well. But it's not without its rewards — I learned about how the instruments perform across their registers, and also got a couple tips of things not to do in certain places (no Bb's to Gb's on the flute.)
I also have such a respect for small chamber ensembles, as what they do is incredibly difficult, very precise, and very coordinated. My hat's off to all the performers involved in the concert.
